The stories in Seeds of Love deal with range of major contemporary issues. Some graphically portray the struggles of Malay rice-cultivators in the fertile, rice bowl region of Kedah. Other focus on family relationships, and, in particular, the tensions which can exist between strict fathers and their equally proud sons. Yet others portray show the subtleties of Muslim mysticism as lived out in human relationships.
Many of these stories are characterised by a harsh realism. Azizi does not romanticise the countryside. He knows its anxieties and powerful emotions too well for that. The changes currently taking place in Malay society are graphically and sympathetically evoked.
Beneath the realism, however, ia a firm trust in the strength of human nature, an unwavering confidence in human affection and a powerful optimism that those who survive the change will do so with dignity and faith in God.
