The picture Fatimah Busu paints of Malay society and Malay wives is not a flattering image. Maria Zaitun is abused and ostracised for reasons unbeknown to her. Maria escapes society and seeks refuge deep in the jungle at the house of the blind and deaf MaKimbung, who has given a home to thirty women and girls who have fled there or been abandoned. Maria begins to change their lives materially and spriritually. After her disappearance, society changes its attitude to Maria and she is placed on pedestal. Yet, waiting in the wings is Siti Senang, a journalist out to destroy Maria’s newly-respected image and usurp her status for her own devious ends.
